Together, let us honor the legacy of those who paved the way and foster a future of inclusivity, empowerment, and shared pride to be enjoyed 365 days a year.

WIBCA presents HERstory

The West Island Black Community Association (WIBCA) is thrilled to extend an invitation to join us at this year’s premiere Black History Month Event. Themed “HERstory,” we have an evening planned that will inspire and empower all to be more resilient in achieving and living your dreams.

Spotlighting the experiences, challenges, and successes of trailblazing women of color in our community, motivating all women and men to navigate their paths to success with determination, even when faced with adversity.

HEART AND SOUL

In this 2nd edition of Lovers & Friends, we welcome back a mesmerizing flow of musical excellence, showcasing SHAHARAH and her live band. The critically acclaimed singer and R&B Royalty will serenade you down memory lane.

We are adding a new twist for your musical enjoyment. The violin-playing icon KAYIRI will open the festivities and sweep you off your feet with her distinctive string fare.

YOUTH AGAINST VIOLENCE

The “Together Against Violence” basketball tournament is set to take place on February 24 and 25.

This event is organized by the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations in collaboration with the Jamaica Association of Montreal, the Trevor Williams Kids Foundation, the West Island Black Community Association, and the Montreal Mynix Athletic Club, funded by the city of Montreal under the Prevention Montreal program.

A central element of their joint youth violence prevention initiative, the tournament employs basketball to guide youth away from violence and crime.

ONE LOVE

BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE celebrates the life and music of an icon who inspired generations through his message of love and unity. Produced in partnership with the Marley family BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE is in theatres February 14, 2024.

We are thrilled to team up with Paramount Pictures Canada to provide our community with tickets for advanced screenings of the film happening on February 12th in Montreal (in English and French).

BLACK SYMPOSIUM NOIR

The black symposium noir is a bilingual community-based and non-university affiliated gathering organized by graduate students and post-graduates with the support of the Uptown Institute and Chalet Kent, a community-rooted non-profit organization and youth centre in Côte-des-Neiges. The symposium’s focus is to advance the radical traditions and possibilities of Black studies, études noires and the broader landscape of Black thought.

From March 15 to 16 2024, the symposium will convene scholars, artists, and activists to share their work that explores Blackness and anti-Blackness within the context of Montreal and Quebec.

During this BHM, we come together in a service of thanksgiving to honor the remarkable contributions of Black individuals throughout history. We recognize their profound impact on our collective journey. May this service be a poignant reminder of the strength derived from diversity and a celebration of music and the art.

Montreal Steppers launch Black

History Month at McGill

In 2023, Kayin Queeley was named a Black Changemaker by CBC for his work founding and leading the Montreal Steppers. That’s because the group is more than a performance collective: it’s a means of educating people – particularly youth.
